Jesus is with His 11 disciples. Judas has taken off to do his thing. He's giving the last words to His disciples, and we know everyone pays attention to a dying man's last words. They are very important. Chapter 17 is all a prayer by Jesus. Jesus is continually uttering this prayer as He walks with His disciples to the garden. He's showing the solidity the disciples have with Him and the Father in heaven, that even though He's leaving, He will still be with them from heaven. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Sanctify means set aside, you are special, you belong to Jesus. Jesus didn't come to earth to get into the political turmoil of the world; He came to gather His people and give the word of God to mankind. We have to live in the world, but we don't have to be a part of it. We are set aside by the truth and believing in God's word, the truth. 20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; He's talking about us Christians. The apostles went out and evangelized in the known world, and those they talked to spread the word further till it covered the globe. It is still going on to this day. Jesus prayed for you right here. 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. The unity of Christianity brings glory and honor to Christ in His coming. We are all united in Christ. This is why it is so bad for Christians to fight among themselves and divide up churches.
