4/19/2020 Scripture: Luke 24:13-43 Text: same Sermon: CHRIST VISITS HIS DISCIPLES TO CONFIRM HE IS ALIVE Points: I. The Need for this Confirmation II. The Means of this Confirmation III. The Words of this Confirmation
Gloom, doom, and despair is what the disciples experienced after the death of the Lord Jesus on Good Friday. What is surprising is that this spirit prevailed upon the disciples even on Easter Sunday.
How can this be? Their Lord and Savior had risen victorious from the grave? Well, at this point their eyes were still darkened and their hearts and minds were not able to grasp the truth.
The Conversation Jesus has with two of his disciples on the Road to Emmaus convinced Him that it would be necessary to visit go back to Jerusalem and visit with them. Even when he was present they still feared and doubted. Amazing.
Jesus says "Peace to you" but they still didn't believe. We're finally told that "He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures." The John 20:22 version of this says, 22 "And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit."
This pre-Pentecost Pentecost foreshadowed the ongoing work of the Spirit in the life of the Church.
