The fact is, if Christ did actually – literally – bear „the whole of wrath divine‟, then we are left with universalism; that is, every single sinner who ever lived with be eternally saved. But this is clearly contrary to the teaching of God‟s word: ...these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life (Matt. 25:46). Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:16). Whoever believes in [Christ] is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil... Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him (John 3:18-19,36).
