Spiritual Gifts: Part 17 Order in the Church: The Silent Subjection of Women to Public Prophecy 1 Corinthians 14:33b-35
Women are to silently subject themselves to public prophecy. Because God has ordained their silence (34, 37) Paul's commands are God's commands (apostolic authority) (34, 37) The Law requires their subjection (34b) Creation: Adam's priority in creation (Gen 1:26-27; 2:18ff) Fall: Eve's priority in being deceived (Gen 3:1-7) Because God has designed for learning to be done through the husband (35a) A woman's authority chain is through her husband (or other leader) The home is the proper venue for a woman's questions Because public outbursts of women bring shame (35b) Husband is shamed because he isn't leading his wife Wife is shamed because she bypasses her husband's leadership Because God requires order in the church (40) God is glorified and God's people edified when there is order in the church!
Applications…. What this text is NOT saying: There is an absolute ban on the use of a woman's voice in worship. Men are always right. There is no role for women in public worship. What this text IS saying: God requires and delights in order in public worship. Women are not to publicly challenge or question church leadership as the leaders proclaim the Word Men are to lead their families in the instruction of the Word. There is something within each one of us women that wants to garner public attention—and to bypass God's authority system That there is something within each of us men that wants to neglect our wives and let someone else minister the Word to them! We all need to come to the cross and realize that it is here that
