We all desire the perfect peace in verse 3. But so often it seems unattainable. And in some ways it is. This peace is not attainable by us. But with God, all things are possible. Why is peace so elusive, though? Because we are looking for the byproduct of peace, rather than what grants the byproduct.
So what grants peace? This passage is the answer to that question. The answer is by keeping your mind stayed upon the Lord. And how do we do that? By trusting in the Lord. What does it mean to trust the Lord? In this verse, trust has more to do with your emotions than your brain. It means to feel confident in the Lord.
How can we apply this to our walk with God? We must memorize Scripture. Our knowledge of God and relationship with God is based on your knowledge of and relationship to the Word of God. More knowledge of God means more peace. We can't just know about God. We must know God personally.
On this way to perfect peace, then, there is some to our part and some to God's part. Our part is to trust in God and lay on our hearts the Scriptures. On God's part is to give us perfect peace and to protect us.
