In this passage we see the domestic rivalry, envy, and jealousy that went on between Jacob's two wives, Leah and Rachel. Yet all three of these people also exhibited faith in Yahweh. So they were a mixed bag, sinful people yet also believers in the true God. We observe here the circumstances surrounding the birth of 11 of the 12 sons of Jacob who formed the Hebrew nation and its 12 tribes. Thus Christ's ancestors were not shining stars of virtue but sinners with spiritual weaknesses. Yet God used them to bring about his purposes in the earth. He can do the same with us.
