We see God's love, not only in creation but in his promise of a Redeemer, the Seed of the Woman. Fast forward to Abram's day and we find that idolatry had largely obscured the worship and promise of God. The God called Abram to separate - renounce his society and follow God's word. With that he gave a promise, and he entered into a covenant relationship with Abram (as he had done with Adam). Such an arrangement has terms and conditions, it gives certainty, and it depends on the faithfulness of the parties covenanting with one another. God promised a child who would become 'a great nation'. He promised faithful care. Above all, he promised a blessing to 'all nations' through that child. When we look at the New Testament commentary (Galatians 3) we find the child is Christ, and the promises are made through and to him. Thus Abram looked for more than land in Canaan (Hebrews 11). The big picture is God preserving his word until Christ's coming by forming a nation distinct from the rest. Through them the Seed of the Woman would come, and his birth would be understood. Then separation would give way to penetration as 'all nations' received the good news of the Redeemer (Pentecost). We learn some things in addition to the facts of the story. 1) God keeps his promises down the centuries - Christ will come again. 2) God uses his servants, and when we obey we can expect him to work. 3) God stands by his people - "I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonours you I will curse."
