Jacob flees for his life because his brother Esau is incensed for having been tricked out of his inheritance rights. Jacob arrives in Haran and meets up with his family, including his cousin Rachel, whom he falls in love with and wants to marry. But his future father-in-law, Laban, tricks Jacob into sleeping with Leah, Rachel's older sister, instead of with Rachel, so the great deceiver (Jacob) is deceived. Jesus our Lord descended from heaven to join with this bunch of scheming, conniving people. Because of God's grace and purpose, human failings, such as our own, are often the vehicle through which God accomplishes his will and gets glory for himself.
