There is a near/far aspect to prophecy. While the prophet addresses circumstances at hand, often what said cannot possibly relate to the situation. The Lord intends to use a contemporary platform to reveal future plans and events.
God clearly reveals that He intends to eliminate sin and rebellion from the earth and restore the conditions of Eden before the fall (2:2–5; 11:1-9). God raised up the nation of Israel to advance that plan. However, Israel was a rebellious and stubborn nation, disobedient to God's covenant and disloyal.
The dilemma is clear. How does the Lord accomplish His goal with a nation He is about to judge? His sovereign purposes are sure (14:24). Israel will produce His great King (9:6, 7; 11:1-9). Though His Son, Immanuel, God will accomplish His end; and that will also involve a remnant people whom He call and prepare.
