Our church has what we call "the Bible fellowship hour" at 10:00 AM which is followed by congregational worship at 11:00 AM. During the Bible fellowship hour we are reading through Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. This past week we began chapter six which is about "VANITY FAIR." It seemed good therefore to follow up that theme with this message from I John. Vanity Fair in Bunyan's day was actually internerant, occasional, and outdoors. The fairs then were the rough equivilent of a mordern shopping mall. Vanity Fair in our day is permanent, habitual, and indoors. Vanity fair is inside the walls of our homes 24/7, 365 days peryear. In the most private room in your house, with the turning of a knob, or the click of a mouse--there it is, Vanity Fair--calling to you, "What will you buy?" The recipients of I john are quite disatinguished persons. They are "forgiven for His name's sake". Some are "fathers", persons of extensive true victorious spiritual experience. Others are "young men who are strong," who have "overcome the wicked one". They have known and still know, "Him that was from the beginning." So what advice do such people need? They need to "keep the conquest." This well known passage is of unusual impotance for believers at all levels of spiritual experience.
