After his greatest victory Elijah fears for his life and hides in a cave on Mt. Hureb (Sinai). He begins to take steps not orchestrated by God but in the realm of his own thinking. Elijah feels that his present circumstances do not mesh with his faithfulness toward God all this time. Our circumstances ought to draw us closer to God, not further away. God has to teach Elijah, and us, a new faith; one that relies on the providential work of God that is not seen by man.
