In view of the opposition to Christian life and service the Spirit here calls us to "be strong". That does not mean being self-confident or overbearing. It means that we should not weaken in our Christian walk. Christ is our strength - we have none without him. And with him we can "do all things". If we are doing his work he will use his strength. It will help us if we remember the evidence - witnesses who are trustworthy, especially those who have seen the risen Christ. Christ wants us to be strong not only for ourselves but for the sake of the generations to come - the message is a sacred deposit to be kept from error and passed down to others. He uses three illustrations of what it means to be strong and overcome. A soldier does not allow personal matters to interfere with his duty; the Christian's focus should also be to please his commander. An athlete must keep to the rules of the game; and the Christian must live in such a way as will lead to glory. Farmers must work hard in order to achieve a harvest, and those who do that deserve the best; Christians who do not strive cannot expect the blessing. The Spirit calls us to think - "consider Jesus Christ ...". It is a mistake to imagine that feelings or activity is enough, for our strength varies in proportion to the impact the gospel makes on us. We also have the confidence that God takes care of his message - "the Word of God is not chained"; so our effort will be worthwhile. The final saying shows the relationship between Christ and his servants. Paul endured in order to see sinners saved. And God is faithful and true - to himself, to all, and to you.
