It is often said, “God doesn’t have any grandchildren. God has children—sons and daughters.” A person isn’t a Christian because his/her parent is a Christian. Children born by Christian parents are part of the covenant community and are baptized in the Church. The Apostle Paul says that they are considered “holy” or set apart by God (1 Cor. 7.14). However, every person must be born again in order to see and enter the kingdom of God. In our passage, Jesus Christ declares the source of new birth (v. 3); and, the means by which new birth occurs (vv. 5-6).
