The book of Galatians has been called the 'Cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation', for it was through a careful study of this book that Martin Luther rediscovered God's plan of salvation by grace through faith plus nothing. But it has also been called the 'Magna Carta of Spiritual Liberty' or the Christian's 'Declaration of Independence' for it maintains that only through the grace of God in Christ Jesus can one escape the curse of sin and of the law, and live a new life, not in bondage nor in license, but in true, genuine freedom! It exposes the most popular substitute for spiritual living we have today-- legalism, the belief that one is 'spiritual' by what one does and doesn't do. Legalism distills the Christian life to a list of 'dos and don'ts' rather than a life of submitting to the lordship of Jesus Christ and following the leading of the Holy Spirit. In Christ Jesus, we have been emancipated! We need to learn to LIVE IN FREEDOM. This introductory sermon sets the stage, introduces the themes, and gives a general outline for the study of the book of Galatians. We discover why Paul is the ideal person to speak of both legalism and grace. We also consider the personal relationship that Paul enjoyed with the Galatians and why he had no words of commendation for them. False teachers were attacking Paul's credentials as a genuine apostle of Christ, and thus his message and motives. Paul quickly seeks to lay out the truth concerning himself, his message, and motives as he begins to speak about the freedom to which we've been called and in which we are to live. Living in the freedom of God's grace!
