The Gospel According To John May 6, 2012 Sermon Lesson 79 John 16:16-24 That Your Joy May be Full
Because God sovereignly superintended Jesus' passion, our joy may be full! Sovereign over Death: The Son will soon depart and return (16-19) Jesus' promise (16) A little while and you will see me no longer (16a) Again a little while and you will see me (16b) The disciples' confusion about Jesus' promise (17-18) Jesus' repetition of His promise (19) Sovereign over Joy: The Son will turn sorrow into joy (20-22) Contrasts of sorrow and joy (20) You will weep and lament, the world will rejoice (20a) You will be sorrowful, sorrow will turn to joy (20b) Illustration of sorrow turning to joy—a woman gives birth (21) Disciples' hearts will rejoice...Jesus will see them again (22) Sovereign over Prayer: The Father grants requests made “in Jesus' name” (23-24) The disciples' requests to the Father will be granted (23) You will ask nothing of Me (23a) Whatever you ask the Father in My Name, He will give it (23b) The disciples' joy may be full (24) Until now you have asked nothing in My name (24a) Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full (24b) Applications We should be seeing answers to our prayers! We should not be confused about God's plans! We should rest in God's sovereignty over death! We should be joyful—even if we are suffering!
