INTRO: Let me begin this message with the first question I asked in the last message regarding Hebrews 1:1-4: What is the one major thing God did after He created man, according to our passage? He spoke. He gave words to man. He spoke in the past, and so in verse 1 we have a reference to the OT. Then He spoke to us in these last days through Jesus Christ. From the assignment of the last message, tell me the one major thing Jesus Christ accomplished on earth before He sat down in heaven? He purged us from our sins! In order for Jesus to purge us from our sins, God first had to speak in the past. The OT must come before the New. Without God speaking in the past, Christ could not have purged us from our sins. The history of the past was necessary for the sacrifice of Christ to be meaningful. Look at our passage once more. By the way, how about memorizing it? We begin in Hebrews 1:1: 1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
