What do you expect, desire or pursue when you go to preach, or to hear preaching? For Paul, these were vital questions which touched on the very heart of the gospel. He explains to the Corinthians how he preached and why he preached.
He deliberately turned his back on persuasive words of human wisdom, making known a crucified Christ in the demonstration of the Spirit and of power. He did this in order that the faith of those who heard might rest not in the wisdom of men but rather in the power of God.
This, then, is the kind of preaching we should expect, desire, and pursue: a simple setting forth of Jesus Christ and him crucified, in the confident hope that the Spirit would carry the truth into the hearts of sinners with convincing, convicting and converting power.
