All of us have experienced crushed dreams, times of disillusionment and depression caused by unmet, perhaps unrealistic expectations. Such was the experience of the disciples after the crucifixion of Jesus. Their dreams of political deliverance had died. Two disciple, on the road to Emmaus, were filled with despair. This sermon follows them on their journey-- uncovers characteristics of those with 'downcast eyes' and the root cause of their despair. But it also reveals how Jesus turned these two around by challenging them to examine the basis of their expectations and then by correcting their spiritual understanding by instructing them from God's Word. These disciples made a U-turn on the road to despair and headed in the opposite direction. But how can we know that we are going in the right direction spiritually? We know we are headed the right way when we want to spend more time with Jesus; we see Jesus in the daily activities of life; we experience a burning passion when studying God's Word; and we eagerly share the resurrected Christ with others.
