The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem had been foretold by the Prophet Zechariah many years before.
Numbers of Jews in Jesus's day looked forward to a Golden Age where Israel would triumph over their enemies. They believed that God would help them do this by sending them a Messiah/ King that would lead them to victory.
As Jesus rode into Jerusalem He was given a royal welcome as the Jewish people laid down their garments and Palm branches on the road to welcome their Messiah King.
Finally the long awaited descendant of King David had arrived. There were those amongst the Jews that hoped that the military conquest was going to begin.
At the Passover when 1000's of Lambs were sacrificed, Jesus was to become God's Lamb to be sacrificed for the sins of the entire world.
Zechariah in the Old Testament also spoke of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem some 500 years before.
Zechariah was a Prophet of Judah. God used him to bring hope to the Jews that had returned from the captivity in Babylon to rebuild the Temple. Zechariah let God's people know that they were not forgotten and that they had a future after the captivity.
God had promised to send a Saviour and that promise was going to be kept. Zechariah in the Old Testament prophesied both of the first Coming of Jesus and of the Second Coming of Jesus.
