From the time of the earliest prophesies to the patriarchs, there has been a promise of the inheritance of "the land" and that the Lord would take up residence with His people by placing His name in a place of His choosing. (Nehemiah 1:9, et al.) The Lord did indeed grant His people an inheritance of real estate which they subsequently lost due to unfaithfulness and seeking after other gods. We also know that the Lord chose to place His name in Jerusalem, but departed due to their spiritual adultery. We also know from later revelation that this land promise was a type and that the fulfillment of the original promise is that the church – the spiritual Jerusalem – is the true fulfillment. So, when we consider Psalm 122, the Psalmist rejoices to see and consider the city of Jerusalem, but what he sees is a type and looks forward to the fulfillment. The city under Kings David and Solomon was a glorious city to behold and the temple was indeed majestic. It was truly a blessed city. But the New Jerusalem – the redeemed of the Lord is a much more glorious, majestic and blessed city. – Pastor Schlegel
