The topic of today’s text is something we all know intellectually but often don’t really know in practice. (which is evidenced by how often we act in a way contrary to this knowledge!)
Beloved, let us love one another.
Not one of us would disagree that as Christians we should love one another. But many of us (and many times) when the rubber meets the road, we fail to live in a way that confirms this belief.
John wants his readers (and us) to love one another but recognizes that it is not certain that they will follow his desire. Hence this fits with the way he has structured this paragraph.
In this short paragraph John is going to tell us why we are to love one another. He is going to show what this love looks like, or how we are to love one another, and finally he is going to show us the result, the outcome of when we love this way.
Why love, what love looks like, what love accomplishes.
