In our text in Luke 9, the disciples are Discouraged and Confused about Jesus. By God's grace, they had recognized Him to be the Messiah – God's Promised King. But then instead of Jesus drawing up battle plans to overthrow Rome, He began talking about suffering and dying at the hands of the elders and chief priests.
This news had been quite a shock to the disciples. For the last several days, they have been thinking, “How can God's King suffer and die? Maybe we were wrong about Jesus. Maybe He is not who we thought He was.”
But God is not going to leave them in this state of confusion and disillusionment. God is going to graciously let Peter, James, and John witness a taste of the glory of Jesus to give them an assurance of who Jesus is. The title of the message is the glory of Jesus. I have divided the sermon into two parts this morning - Recognizing His Glory and Responding to His Glory. Recognizing His Glory Under Recognizing His Glory, this event teaches us three things about the glory of Jesus. 1) Jesus is Glorious in His Person 2) The Bible Highlights His Glory 3) Jesus Receives Glory from God the Father.
Responding to His Glory 1) Look at Him! There is a humorous and instructive part to this story. Jesus was praying and when He was first transfigured, the disciples were asleep! V32 says when they became fully awake they saw His glory. We too can miss so much of the glory of Jesus if we are not alert spiritually. 2) Listen to Him! 3) Long for Him! The glory the disciples witnessed was just a small preview of the glory in which Jesus will return.
