Barabbas was an insurrectionist who was condemned to die during the feast of the Passover. Why during the Passover? As an example and a warning to any Jews who might wish to rise up against the Roman authority. It is very likely the two men who were crucified with Jesus were also part of the insurrection. Barabbas was the recipient of the "substitutionary atonement" of Jesus Christ, first instituted in Leviticus 16 by the Lord, and known as Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Jesus, an innocent man, died a substitutionary death in place of a man who justly deserved to die. Barabbas is a picture of all men. We are all Barabbas.
