Theme: Followers of Christ must be sure of Christ's return and be prepared for it in their daily living. In vv. 34-36, Jesus tells His disciples how to respond in light of the coming of the Son of Man. First, we are to watch ourselves to make sure that our hearts aren't weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness, and the cares of this life. In application, we need to keep worldly cares in check, not laying up for ourselves treasures on earth but in Heaven. In v. 36, Jesus exhorts His disciples to stay alert, by being in communication with God. We are reminded by this, to prioritize our relationship with Christ. In vv. 37-38, Jesus's teaching ministry is seen in light of the cross. This is an example to us to not panic in the face of trouble but to be faithful in doing God's work. Let us be living so that when Jesus returns, He finds us serving Him faithfully!
