In this day and age when so many have lost old-fashioned, common sense, it is needful for me to give a disclaimer concerning child discipline. On one side are people that will take certain teachings of the Bible out of context, or in the wrong manner; and in their zeal to obey God, they will end up hurting children in ways God does not advocate.On the other side is a new, arrogant generation of people who think they are going to teach our forefathers how to "really" raise children the right way! And we have been watching and experiencing the sad effects of their " improved wisdom" for the past 50 years! The truth is found in the Bible, properly interpreted. Therefore, for the record, I believe the Bible teaches that children - when they are old enough to understand, and be held responsible - should be chastised on their bottoms in a manner that is appropriate and fitting for their age. The Biblical verses about "stripes" do NOT refer to children - but to ADULTS - being beaten with corporal chastisement for crimes in society. I do NOT believe that any child should be spanked, whipped, or chastised in such a manner that it leaves stripes, wounds, etc. The Bible does not advocate such things in regard to children. I do not even believe children should be disciplined in rage or aggressive anger. And, of course, I certainly do not believe children should be spanked or chastised in such a way that bones are broken, or other internal damage is caused (It is sad to have to give such a disclaimer). I do not believe that parents should lose control of themselves. All discipline should be consistent, and loving, and followed by the deepest affection.
