This is the first study in this series on this pastoral epistle regarding care for the churches, sent by the Apostle Paul to his true son in the faith, Titus. That common faith, in which all God's people stand on the same footing, having had their sins pardoned and forgiven though Christ.
The apostle commends himself to Titus as a servant. Truly, we are not our own, we are bought with a price, we are a purchased people. A people that were formerly slaves of Satan, but now, in Christ, made free. We too are servants, called to serve. A high calling indeed.
Paul's writings are foundational, and we can well believe that although written to Titus, Paul's words, under inspiration, come down to us in our day, and may be interpreted as being for our example and instruction also. The apostle writes to Titus "Setting in order the things that are wanting" (KJV), or, "things that are lacking" NKJV).
Election, Godliness, eternal life, the fact that God cannot lie, the God ordained place of preaching as the primary means of proclaiming the Gospel, are all addressed in the early verses of this instructional epistle. |
