Aim: To be Christ-imitating leaders of the world (as the church).
Doctrine: Churchmen are to be gracious masters in and of God's world. Being a master is harder than being a slave, and requires a lot of meekness.
Exegesis: The pattern for Godly church masters to follow: we are to serve those below us (v. 9a); we are to lovingly fear the One above us (v. 9b); we are to reflect God's perfect justice (v. 9c).
Further application: How the church is to conceive of her mastery of others: it is not the promotion of self-idolatry; rather, it is the administration of Christ-grace.
Key verse: v. 9 ''And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.''
