In the relationship between the apostle Paul and Timothy we see the finest example of what NT discipleship should look like. This spiritual father-son relationship was the result of the promise of life in Christ Jesus that was experienced by Paul and also by Timothy as the latter was taught the scriptures by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice before Paul ever met him. Paul was a man called by the sovereign will of God to be an apostle and a disciple-maker. He was a man of strong doctrine, faithful prayer, and a deeply loving disposition to those whom he discipled, such as Timothy. Likewise, Timothy was beloved first by God, then his mother and grandmother, and also by Paul, his mentor in the faith. We who have also been called into relationship with God through Christ should rejoice that we are heirs of the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus as we are given the privilege of serving God and standing in the tradition of dedicated Christian disciples.
