Paul wrote to tell the Corinthian church that prophecy - the forthtelling of God's Word - is superior to tongues in at least three ways:
1) Prophecy is Intelligible 2) Prophecy Builds up the Church by edifying the saints and evangelizing the lost 3) Prophecy benefits the entire assembly while tongues were only a benefit to the speaker.
While the context today is markedly different in that God's prophetic word is now contained entirely within the scriptures, these verses still have a clear application to the modern day controvery over extraordinary spiritual gifts like tongues and healing.
