God's Word is first for His people. What He has revealed is to be heard, heeded, and obeyed so His people will be a holy people unto Him. In it He has revealed everything He wants us, His people, to know so that we do not have to search for it anywhere else. His Word must remain front and center, authoritatively in every life personally and in the ministry of each local body of Christ.
The problem down through the ages has been that sinful people do not like what He has said and want to go their own way. As people who may have once claimed to know the Lord drift from Him they do not want to hear His Word and seek out those teachers who will tell them what they want to hear. As God sees it, when His people won't listen and heed His Word they are turning their backs on Him as they make the turn to the false teachers.
Since there is only two sources of spiritual information - truth from God and lies from the devil - as someone turns from the truth of God the only alternative are the lies and myths.
Because of the seriousness of these issues as Paul was writing Timothy - and continuing down through the Church today - four more commands are given to further exhort believers to be faithful to the end. Faithfulness will never be easy and will always take an ongoing deliberate effort to combat the relentless efforts of the devil and the waywardness of our fallen nature.
