“People perish from a lack of hearing the word of the Lord.” Amos’ words sadly apply to often to our own day. The role of the prophet was two-fold. He foretold the future. This aspect of prophesy has passed away with the fullness of biblical revelation. But he also “forthtold” the truth. This aspect of the prophet’s ministry applies in every age. God is clear. If those called to preach the word are faithful, then the blood of those who do not repent will be on their own heads. However, if the preacher is not faithful and refuses to proclaim the truth to people, then the blood of the people will be on his head! Such is the weighty nature of being called to the ministry. This warning needs to be heeded by every pastor and elder in God’s church. Who will speak for God?
