Chapter 2 closes with the people accusing God of being absent as His people suffer. They excuse their own infidelity to the covenant and have the audacity to charge God with failure on His part. Now God answers them by promising to come in judgment. Only those who have held God in reverence will escape. This sermon shows that our reply to God today should be one of repentance and trusting in the promise of blessing just as Israel should have responded to God’s messenger in their day. Escape from God’s judgment is not found in running from God but rather embracing His promise of blessing through the Messenger of the Covenant: Jesus the Messiah.
