This part of the Bible is the very beginning of a sermon by the Lord Jesus that is commonly called the “Sermon on the Mount,” which fills chapters 5-7 of the book of Matthew. In these nine verses, Jesus describes the eight characteristics of the people of God. These statements do not constitute a formula for earning salvation or God’s blessings in the sense of “do these things and you will receive these things”; they do not address how to enter the kingdom of heaven. Rather, they describe the state or condition of people who are citizens of the kingdom of heaven. The statements are not to be understood as separate aspects or traits of the “kingdom citizen”. They comprise a group of interrelated qualities or facets of the people of God. Every person who belongs to God possesses all of these traits, in varying degrees. And, the characteristics are “organically connected” with each other. By describing these characteristics, Jesus draws a dramatic contrast between the kingdom of men and the kingdom of God, between wrong religion and right religion, and between the people of God and the people of the world.
