The kings of the northern and southern kingdoms, joined by the king of Edom set out to subjugate the kingdom of Moab. They set out with their battle plans and ran into trouble before any engagement with Moab when they ran out of water. The prophet of the Lord, Elisha is summoned because they wanted the Lord's help. His message from the Lord instructed them what to do so water would be provided and also revealed they would be successful in conquering Moab.
The alliances Jehoshaphat, king of the southern kingdom, made with those godless kings had an ungodly influence on his family. He had promoted the marriage of his son to the daughter of Ahab & Jezebel, opening the door for their corruption to spread in the southern kingdom. Destructive consequences would result even after his death.
Faithfulness to the Lord, even for us, means separating from godless influences and not commiting ourselves in alliances with the ungodly.
