There is a time when it is expected that you will be a fleshy Babe in Christ but there is never a right time to be a fleshly Baby in Christ.
When a person comes to Christ and receives him as Savior at that very moment they have born in them a new Spiritual life. Where once at the core of their being they were ruled by a self life that was wed to sin they now have in that place a new man betrothed to the Lord Jesus. There in that place we hold communion with the Savior. He lives in us. We live in him. It all begins when we give our hearts to the Lord Jesus. At that moment we are babes in Christ. We are at that time fleshy little babes. Paul uses a word for this reality that the NIV has translated worldly and the KJV has translated carnal. But the best translation is “Fleshy” or “of the Flesh.” Now that is a good description of a Baby.
In verse 1 and 3 in the NIV the word both time is worldly and in the KJV it is Carnal but actually there is a change between the two words. It is the same word in both verses but with two different constructions. These constructions change the meaning of the word. In verse one it really says fleshy but in verse 3 it is Fleshly. Fleshy was a description of the facts as they were by nature. They were Babes. They were fleshy. Fleshly one the other hand, is a description of the facts as they were by their own choice. They had settled into a life that was continuing to be lived at the level of their flesh; a life not dictated by the growth that should have come from their changed and transformed spirits.
