Aim: To preach the crucified and resurrected Christ (and not us)—as the faithful church.
Doctrine: Outside of Christ, sinners are horribly confused about all things of ultimate importance. Sometimes lost souls stumble over profound aspects of God's truth, and the Lord is able to use even error as a means of our presenting Jesus to people.
Exegesis: How our sovereign Lord turns idolatry into evangelism: His church's gospel preaching leads to miracles (and their ''messes'') (vv. 7-13), which provides us an opening to relate to our hearers (vv. 14-16), that ends with God getting all the glory in and through Christ (vv. 17-18).
Further application: Why it is so vital that the Church direct everyone to Jesus: because otherwise sinners invariably worship the wrong object, and nothing good accrues when Christ is not the center of everything.
Key verse: v. 15 ''Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them...''
