As recently reported by CNN, a firestorm has erupted recently among Christians over some statements made by controversial pastor and author, Rod Bell. A video on Bell's website shows him speaking about the topics covered in his soon to be released book, entitled, "Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived".
In typical Rob Bell fashion, during the promotional video he asks many provocative questions and makes some bold statements about some long-held theological doctrines. Specifically, he calls into question, the orthodox position on eternal punishment. Additionally, throughout the video he seems to be promoting the theological liberal doctrine of Universalism – a belief all people, regardless of what they believe will eventually be saved.
Some Evangelicals have quickly condemned Bell and his statements. Others, while expressing concern have cautioned the we should reserve judgment until the book is actually released on March 15th. Zondervan, who published four books by Bell, as well as his Nooma video series, severed ties with Bell saying, the book content “did not fit with their mission”.
My guest on the program today, will be Tim Challies (www.Challies.com). Tim has received an Advanced Reading Copy of the manuscript that was provided specifically for review purposes. Based on that manuscript Tim has posted a review of the book. During the program today, I will play the audio file from the short video on Rob Bell site and then ask Tim to take us step by step through the review that he posted.
In the last segment of the program, I hope to have time to speak with Tim Challies about his soon-to-be-released book. |
