When Jesus was led into the wilderness, he fasted for 40 days and nights. Matthew 4:2 seems to state the obvious that he was hungry. The Devil came to him and pointed out the stones on the ground, saying it would be possible for the Son of God to make them be bread. Jesus responded by quoting part of Deuteronomy 8:3: "It is written , Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).
When Jesus went to Samaria, he sat on a well and was weary. The disciples went to buy food because they had not eaten. He met a Samaritan woman and told her about the living water that would mean she would never thirst again. The disciples returned with food, but Jesus wouldn't eat it. He told them, "I have meat to eat that ye know not of" (John 4:32). They were puzzled and questioned if someone had brought him food. He explained, "My meat is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work" (John 4:34).
In both instances, Jesus identified the Father's word and will as necessary as our daily food that sustains our life. Like that daily food, the Father's word strengthened him to keep his word and do his will. The writer of Psalm 119 in the eighth stanza, speaks to the food, which is God's word, for our lives on earth.
