Old Testament: Daniel 2:31-45 Gospel: John 4:19-26 Sermon Text: Exodus 20:22-26
[22] And the LORD said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven. [23] You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold. [24] An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you. [25] If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it. [26] And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.’
1. The First Commandment reemphasized- God alone No other gods- which you might be tempted to make (Canaanite (and Egyptian) gods numerous- a god for every situation. Silver and Gold--your most precious material are not good enough to represent God- they are mere elements of creation! Visual representations of God are not an aid to worship. No image of God can begin to capture the being of God!
2. Approaching God in Worship v. 24…sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, Burnt offerings- Atonement ‘Olah—to rise up (in smoke) Peace offerings- thanksgiving Shelamim …fat was burned…meat was roasted and eaten by the worshipers in the presence of God Come as sinners needing atonement and restoration/communion with God and one another
Application: 1. Worship God alone - Whatever is ultimate to you is a god.
