"The picture that Hosea is literally living out here is a sobering warning for us today: that there are many who seem to belong to God who don't really belong to Him. Pastor Richard Philipps has some insightful comments here. He says, 'Like Hosea's Israel, for once-professing Christians to turn from the gospel to embrace secular humanism and worship the idols of sensuality is to renounce the blessings that belong to the children of God. The same might be said for theologically liberal churches that replace the biblical teachings about God, man, sin, and redemption with secularized counterfeits. Whatever Christian emblems they may hang or denominational names they may boast, the reality is that they are not God's people and that he is not their God.' What about Bethel? Are we so spiritually naïve to think that there are none among us that look like Christians but actually aren't? Do we have the external forms of religion and godliness, but hearts that are in bed with either this world or our own self-righteousness?"
