There is parallelism being set up by the structure of the verses that give momentum to the ideas of this Psalm as they move forward. v. 1,2 "If it had not been the Lord" give the sense of anticipation and expectation but are incomplete statements. Complete statements are given in v. 2-5 describing the rage of unbelievers. The answer comes in v. 6, 7 and is not glamorous. It is expressive of the weakness of believers compared to the little bird that is released, by the Lord's mercy, from the predator. Our preservation comes from God alone and from understanding that fact. He is the source of strength and escape for the believer. Even the unbeliever is commanded to call upon God for deliverance.
