Aim: To be faithful to Jesus today—as His beloved church.
Doctrine: Unfaithfulness to God's covenant results in serious consequences. In this world these are worse than unbelievers experience, and yet, faith and repentance can rectify all things (in Christ).
Exegesis: The cycle generated by unfaithfulness: first, God implements the covenant curse—because of disobedience (vv. 1-3); next, God's people feel the pain of their iniquities (v. 4); finally, repentance leads to God's mercy (v. 5).
Further application: How the church is to view the consequences of unfaithfulness: we should recognize how horrible our sin is, all the while trusting that our sovereign God overwhelms it, in Christ.
Key verse: v. 3 ''Therefore I also said, 'I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be thorns in your side, and their gods shall be a snare to you.'''
