Believing that Jesus is the Son of God is the basis of our salvation. John has stated that point several times in several different ways throughout his letter. Now as he completes the main body of his letter, that thought pushes him to deal with one last question: is that a truth we can have confidence in? Are there good grounds for believing that Jesus is the Son of God? As we all know, simply saying something is so doesn't make it true.
Is there solid evidence to support that Jesus really is the Son of God? John's desire is to remove all reasonable doubt. Much like a prosecutor, he summons multiple witnesses and presents their testimony. He demonstrates that they all give the same testimony leading to an inescapable conclusion. Essentially, his closing argument is that (1) because of the consistency of and (2) because of the integrity of these witnesses, we have complete confidence in our faith. Our faith rests on solid witnesses!
