The Gospel According To John February 20, 2011 Sermon Lesson 24 John 5:30-47
MULTIPLE WITNESSES TO THE DEITY OF CHRIST
Even though many will not believe, God provides multiple witnesses to Christ.
Witness of John the Baptist (33-35) Jewish leaders heard John's testimony (33) Jesus uses John's testimony so that they might be saved (34) John was a burning and shining lamp (heat and light) (35)
Rejection: Jewish leaders did not repent (1:19-28; 33)
Witness of the Father's works through Jesus (36) Greater witness than that of John (36a) The works testify that He sent Jesus (36b)
Rejection: did not receive the divine testimony (3:11); adverse reaction to healings on the Sabbath (5:16)
Witness of the Father (37-38) Baptism of Christ (see 1:33-34)
Rejection: His voice, form, and word not heard, seen and lived in by the Jewish leaders (37- 38)
Witness of the Scriptures (39-47) The witness of Scriptures in general (39-44)
Rejection of Scripture (40)
The witness of Moses (46-47) Moses wrote of Christ (46) Belief in Moses is belief in Christ; rejection of Moses is rejection of Christ (46-47)
Rejection of Moses (47)
God still provides His witnesses: Will you respond to His call today?
