I. Cities of Refuge (vv. 1-13) II. Land Boundaries (v. 14) III. Witnesses (vv. 15-21)
Several Closing Observations 1. Notice how God wants His people to be pure! but you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel" (v. 13) "you shall purge the evil from among you" (v. 19)! Eleven times in Deuteronomy. 2. Notice God's great grace in this relationship. All this happened in the land the Lord had given. "When the LORD your God cuts off the nations whose land the LORD your God is giving you,…" (v. 1); "the land that the LORD your God gives you as a possession" (v. 3); "your land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance" (v. 10). Similarly vv. 8, 14. Their entire existence as a nation is one of God's sovereign grace and goodness. We are in a better gracious standing — our entire salvation and standing is one of God's grace to us in Christ. Never formulate any theological statements that minimize or undercut that! 3. Let us yearn for Christ's return and for His final kingdom to be established. All this is in a covenantal relationship and theocratic context in which these laws are expressed. No nation fared better but it did not preserve them. It was to give way to the Messiah who will rule the hearts of men, women and children and at His return establish a perfect Kingdom. One day it will be perfect, Christ will return and there will be kingdom where perfect righteousness dwells, where you and I will no longer sin and be rebels, where the king will reign in perfect holiness and there will be peace forever. Let us yearn for that, pray for that and look forward to that!
