Peter describes for the saints the precious promises of eternal life that we have received from Jesus Christ, and he exhorts us to live holy and righteous lives both because of, and in view of, these promises.
In the last chapter that Peter wrote, he warned against those men who claim there will be no judgment, that God's longsuffering proves it.
But such are ignorant of the great Flood of judgment that took place in Noah's day. This world is now reserved for judgment by fire, which is a sure thing to come against the unrighteous.
Peter remarks, at least twice, of the fact that the surety of this coming judgment ought to provoke us to godly and sober living. The fact that what we have now will all be burned up ought to drive us to live apart unto our Lord.
But the promise of what we shall have in Glory ought also to draw us unto holy living as well! We look for a new heavens and new earth wherein dwelleth Righteousness!
If we truly embrace the exceeding precious promises of the Gospel and of our Lord Jesus, we will long for that day to appear, and we will begin to act in accordance with it.
Too often though, the saints are so mired in the things of this old world that our eyes are taken off the prize of Glory.
When our Lord Jesus comes to reign one day, He will establish a kingdom of righteousness ever increasing. As sinners, we would never be fit to live in such a place, but rather would be burned up with the ungodly.
But our Lord Jesus has cleansed us by His bloodshedding at Calvary! Not only so, but we are sanctified as we gaze upon the blaze of His Glory.
Our God has suited us through Christ's death to be with Him for eternity in Glory!
