John the Baptist began his ministry in an unlikely place preaching an controversial message. Controversial, but compelling. John the Baptist's preaching sucked sinful crowds out of the cities and into the Judean wilderness like a spiritual vacuum sweeper; they came to hear his preaching and be baptized in the River Jordan. The people were in state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ. And as they came and as they pondered, John baptized in the waters of the Jordan, as tax collectors came, soldiers came, priests came…and an extraordinary young rabbi from Nazareth came. In response to the Galilean's appearance, John offered a humble testimony that minimized himself as he maximized Jesus.
Here is John's three part testimony: 1. I am just a herald's voice, but the King is on His way (19-23). 2. I am just a lowly slave, but the Master stands among you (24-28). 3. I am just a witness, but the Lamb of God, the Son of God, has come (29-34)!
