Paul wraps up the first part of his letter having proved that every person is sinful and therefore lacks the righteousness that God requires. Furthermore, no one is able to do anything to acquire that righteousness. As Isaiah 64:6 says, all of our righteous deeds are like filthy rags in God's sight. You see, sin has polluted everything. It taints all of our thoughts, words and deeds. This is so important that we teach it to our children in their children's catechism by asking them, "Can anyone be saved by his own righteousness?" And we instruct them to respond, "No. No one is good enough for God." Well, that is a dire situation to be in. You are required to pay something for which you do not have the resources. God requires you to be righteous. You are unrighteous. Paul intends for us to feel the seriousness and weight of this dilemma. Our mouths are stopped. We have no argument to make. We cannot be declared righteous in His sight because sin has left us unrighteous.
It is at just this point that Paul introduces the next section of his letter.
