February 12, 2017 Sermon Lesson 20 Hebrews 7:1-10 The Greatness of This Man: Melchizedek (Part I)
Main Idea: We must persevere in believing in Jesus for our eternal salvation
• The greatness of Abraham (6:13-6:19; Gen 14:1-16) Great faith (believed God’s promises and oath) Great courage and compassion (rescued Lot)
• The greater greatness of Melchizedek (7:1-10) Melchizedek is greater than patriarch Abraham (1-3a) He blessed Abraham (greater blesses the lesser) (7:1; Gen 14:17-20) Abraham paid him tithes (7:2a) He is a king-priest (7:2b) King of righteousness King of peace Melchizedek is like Christ (3b-4) He is without qualifying priestly genealogy (3b) He continues a priest forever (3b) See how great this man was! (4) Melchizedek is greater than the Levitical priests (5-10) Levites received tithes from the Jewish people (5) Melchizedek received tithes from Abraham (6) “The inferior is blessed by the superior” (7) Levites were dying —Melchizedek lives (8) Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes through Abraham (9) He was still in Abraham’s loins when Melchizedek met Abram (10)
• The even greater greatness of the Son of God (7:11-28; Ps 110:4) (NEXT WEEK!)
Conclusion: We need to believe in Jesus for our eternal salvation! We need to keep believing in Jesus for our eternal salvation!
