Moses is up on the mountain, having a meeting with God, and the Israelites' are busy inventing other ways of worship. They are not aware of what is keeping Moses from coming down the mountain. So, they invent their own golden god. Just like the Israelites, we are also tempted to turn away from God. When we are tempted to think that God will not really work all things for our Good, we are tempted to turn to our own ways. We formulate our own strategies for making life work on our own terms. We bow to the false gods of success and control, beauty, and pleasure instead of trusting the true God. Does any of this ring a bell?
